Build Review: VOLKS 1/144 A-TOLL BS SWANS - PART 4

Well, finally time for some updates ...

The A-TOLL is almost done, it's now finished in its base Colors and just needs some minor color variation and weathering.

Most of the parts were primed with Mission Models Black Primer, followed by different shades of Aluminium by Alclad II. That clearly had the effect of showing where I still needed to finish the parts while supplying a perfect base layer for the hairspray technique.

To add some interest I primed several parts of the model with Tamiya XF-9 Hull Red that'll show a different base color while chipping the parts.

The green is a mix of Tamiya Acrylics - hence I am not fully satisfied with it.
I think it'll Need a few more passes with lighter and darker tones to modulate the parts even more.
The blue is a base of Tamiya X-14 Sky Blue, followed by different passes with X-23 Clear Blue that added not only shadows but also a gloss clear coat.

Some parts like the shield, weapon and shoulder / binder System still need to be completed but I let them separate for painting.

I plan to do a Diorama for this model. Next update (Part 5) will hopefully display the whole mecha "in Scene". As always Q+C are more than welcome. Enjoy!

I'm quite satisfied with the chipping on the outside of the shields - The Aluminium os nicely showing through making for an in-scale "sea water damage effect". The yellow markings were masked off with Tamiya tape and Microscale's Micro Mask and airbrushed with Tamiya XF3-Flat Yellow. It's a bit tricky to clearly mask these areas, so a well diluted brushed version will do it too.

Be carefull when you assemble your A-TOLL model. The hip/torso joint on mine did brake quite easily. This is why I used a 2x0.5mm Aluminium tube by Albion Alloys as a replacement.

The broken peg (and resulting hole) of the hip/Torso joint. I also plan to fix this end of the assembly so that both ends connect more properly.

A view from behind with the skirt assembly dry fitted.

More parts that are primed in Tamiya XF-9 Hull Red.

... to be continued soon (Ca. Sept 2017).
